TATTINGSTONE CRICKET CLUB

  THE EARLY YEARS

The first recorded match played at Tattingstone was on May 24th

1889, most likely in the grounds of Tattingstone Place or even

 Bentley Manor.

The village cricket team existed until 1905, when interest in

 cricket seemed to wain.

Very little is known about those early years but from 1951

onwards , extensive records have been kept.

1951  :  Cricket started at Green Lane when a group of boys  from

Bentley joined up with others from Tattingstone to form

the  " Bentley & Tattingstone" Cricket Club.

Andy Dunn, Albert Peacock and Claude Elford were the

prime movers in Bentley and when joined up with the likes

of Rev. Snell, Roy Shropshire, Fred Driver and Dave Hale,

a decent team was formed, which was unbeaten in 1951.

1952  :  Dave Hale scores first ever century by a Tattingstone

player.  Albert Peacock takes 62 wickets.

1955  :  Dave Hale and Roy Shropshire move away and the team

            struggles.

1953  :  Dave Hale and Albert Peacock star again with 473 runs

            and 80 wickets.

1958  :  Team struggles on with very little batting. Jim Porter, a

boy from the village makes his debut. Another 68

             wickets for Albert.

1956  :  Batting poor but Albert's 70 wickets provide the team

             with plenty of wins.

1960  :   Signs of a revival on the batting front.  Pete Porter,

brother of Jim tops the batting in his first full season.

1959  :   Peter Wyartt and Roger Pyett make their debuts. Batting

still poor but Albert Peacock picks up 98 wickets at 5.3.

1964  :   Eric Fuller and Mel Phair top the batting. Albert Peacock

moves to Copdock.  Mike Cook takes another 58 wickets.

1963  :   Gradual improvement in last two years.  Peter King joins

and introduces Mel Phair to the club.  Eric Fuller and

Mike Cook also join with Mike taking 61 wickets in first

             season.

1965  :   Another difficult season as Peter Wyartt moves away.

Pete Porter spends most of his time on Army duties.

Debut for Bentley boy, Peter Pryke.
