TATTINGSTONE CRICKET CLUB

  IN MEMORIAM

  Listed below are Suffolk based cricket clubs or cricket grounds, that

have been lost in the last 50 years.

A few details are included ,but further information about the listed clubs or others that I have missed, or indeed if any clubs have rose again, I would be please pleased to hear from you.

ALDEBURGH  :   Nomadic team that started life in the Indoor Cricket Centre in

                            Ipswich. Evolved into Thomas Mills, playing at Framlingham  1990's.

BLUE  CIRCLE  :  Claydon Works team at cement factory. Played opposite factory

                             which was also used by other clubs such as Coddenham. (c) 1972

BRITISH SUGAR :  Played alongside factory in Sproughton Road and had use of

                               very nice social club.  Merged with Electric Supply in 1980, but

                               ground was lost to developers and team disbanded in a few years.

BROWNS         :   Took their name from William Browns timber merchants   ( that

                              became Jewsons).  Used to play at Humber Doucy Lane, then

                              moved to Rushmere Sports Club.  Merged with Tattingstone in

                              2003, to become Ipswich C.C., playing at Clay Hall, Copdock.

                                    ( Richard Robinson was their best known player )

BRUNDISH       :    Village team reported to be still playing in 1960.

BOURNE  VALE  :  Evolved from the John Players Cricket Club, but folded early this

                                century.  Their former ground in Halifax Road, was used by Freston till 2014, and then no cricket has been played since 2015.

BOURNE  END    :  Known as the YMCA ground and was extensively used in 1960s

                               and 1970s.  Home to Falconers  C.C. and St.Margarets . Ground

                               taken over for housing, clubhouse demolished.  St.Margarets

                               survived by moving to Ransomes in Sidegate Avenue,

                                                           Falconers didn't

CAMPSEA ASH : Reported to have one of the best pitches in the county in 1900.

                             Their ground in the village was used by Lowestoft Railway for home

                             matches.  Fell out with landowner in 1960 and moved to Woodbridge

                             School to become Deben Valley. The ground was revived in 2014 and

                            the Woodbridge Cricket Club have moved there to play league cricket.

                             

CHELSWORTH  : Small village team near Monks Eleigh. Played on field behind the

                             village hall. Nothing found after 1968.

COBBOLDS       : Works team of Cobbolds Brewery, played at Cliff Lane, Ipswich till

                             around 1964.

BAWDSEY      :    Played friendly and later league cricket on the village playing field for many

                           years.  Shared players with Sutton, Waldringfield and others.  Managed to

                          keep going till around 2010.  Well known for the Mark family , led by father

                          George, plus his two boys.

 

       

BENHALL       :    Played on village playing field in the middle of a football pitch.

                            Shared players with Sudbourne, Yoxford etc. Finished 1980s.

BEALINGS      :    Played in the grounds of Gt. Bealings Hall, on matting pitch.

                                Early Suffolk Alliance League members until 1975.

                                   ( Russ Abbott, Frank Metcalfe, C.Scott  etc)

COCKFIELD       :  Village between Sudbury and Bury.  Club formed in circa 1850 and

                             well respected in those days.  History of friendly cricket in 1960s

                              but nothing much has been recorded since.

CAVALIERS       : Played on a pitch between Kesgrave and Little Bealings (1978-1984)

                             which was taken over for the extraction of building material.

                             Keith Cracknell was a key member with Howlett family and John

                             Daniels.

CAPEL ST. MARY : Played on the village playing field for about 30 years before

                                disbanding in 2006. Several players joined Ipswich C.C. at nearby

                                                            Clay Hall ground.
