MEMORIAM FOUR
RANSOMES : Had a very strong Two Counties League team at one time playing
at Sidegate Ave. Ipswich. A lesser team continued in the Suffolk
Alliance for some time, being disbanding in the mid 1980s.
Ground is now used by St.Margarets.
ROUNDWOOD : Popular pitch off Roundwood Road, Ipswich, the home of
Waterside Works between 1950 - 1955. Land developed.
Waterside works moved to the Mann Egerton ground in Rushmere

RUSHMERE : Not much can be found about this village team, only that they
were playing on Rushmere's Vicarage Meadow in 1960.
SAXSTEAD GREEN : Played in the little triangle next to the windmill till 1970.Played
on a TARMAC track in final year. After 15 or so overs, the ball was
black as was the track, so it was rather tricky to bat.
SHOTLEY : Played in the village up to 1953 and then appeared to play just
away fixtures till around 1966.
Shotley Penisular a team formed in the area, first played at Holbrook
School but then moved to the nearly built Tattingstone square, under
the supervision of Kester Clarke, the famous groundsman.( 2017 )
STUTTON : Played in the grounds of Stutton Hall from 1957, but were forced off
the field in 1997, moving to Brantham. Later a move to Framlingham
prompted a name change to "Castle ". The club is still operating
with a base at Ipswich School , Ivry St. Ipswich.
STONHAM ASPAL : Played on the village playing fields in the early days of the Suffolk
Alliance League. Football dominated the field, leading to extinction
of cricket in 1974. Mac Woollard and Peter Hibbert were members.
SUTTON : Very useful village team that played close to the village hall. Well
remembered for applying Marl to their square, before it became
unfashionable. Disbanded in 1981, with Dick Brewster moving to
Tattingstone. Other players were Ken Helliwell, Adrian Turner,
Andy Foreman, Mick Rose, and many more quality players.
SWEFLING : Small village club, close to Saxmundham that played on a pitch
that sloped sideways and endways, making it a challenge to bat on.
Played in the Alliance league till about 2000.
THORPENESS : Early members of Suffolk Alliance in 1972 and survived until 1991.
John Oates Senior along with Chris & Steve Bell, played there in the
final season. They all moved to Tattingstone in 1992.
Other players of note were John Trimby and Colin Savage.
THOMAS MILLS : Nomadic team that started off from the Ipswich Indoor Stadium
playing outside cricket in Aldeburgh.Finished up at Framlingham
taking the name of a school there.. Always struggled for players
and finally pulled the plug at the end of 2007.
TENDRING PARK : This club is in fact still running, and not extinct as listed earlier.
They play in a park just before you get into Stoke-by Nayland from
the Ipswich side. They have a extensive history, long may it continue.
TRIMLEY ST. Played in the middle of a poor playing field in Trimley, which wasn't
MARY fit for league cricket. Moved to Felixstowe in 2000, to join up with
the Dellwood Avenue club.
WALBERSWICK : Played in the early Suffolk Alliance league around 1973
WETHERDEN : Played in the village till mid 1970s, possibly later. Ian Scotland and
Mike Hunt are names that spring to mind. Several of their players
moved to Stowmarket Cricket Club.
WOOLVERSTONE : A strong team in the 1970s, that played in the school grounds.
PARK Peter Sadler was the key man . He was able to draft in many good
young cricketers from the school .School later became girls only.
WILLIS FABER : Competitive company team that played at Willis Faber sports ground
which became Rushmere Sports Club. The pitch in the Willis days
was very good. The team continued until the mid-1980s.
Mike Pratt and Mike Claydon were key players.
